Embedding Behaviour Support in
Attendant Care Programs
An icare initiative
The skills embedment program is an initiative overseen by an icare project team, Jeff Tonge, Jackie Sutherland, Janelle Smith and Kellie Cooper.
Sue Sloan has been engaged for 12 months to deliver the project.
Challenging behaviour following traumatic brain injury (TBI) is common and impacts not only the participants but also families, friends and service providers.
Attendant care workers play a primary role in supporting the person with challenging behaviour by implementing positive behaviour support.
The Skills Embedment program offered by icare aims to assist and support you and your staff with these challenging programs.
A range of options available to agency staff include (but not limited to):
- One-one or group mentoring of care coordinators and other agency staff
- Monthly webinars held live on topics relevant to TBI and behaviour, with opportunities to ask questions
- Support to review policies and procedures to aid the delivery of behaviour support

I'm a registered occupational therapist and clinical neuropsychologist, and also a behaviour support practitioner (advanced/specialist).
I’ve worked in the field of brain injury for over 40 years and had thousands of hours of experience providing behaviour support to hundreds of people with brain impairment. I also teach and provide supervision to students and graduates and frequently provide education to family members and attendant care workers.
The webinars developed for the icare Skills Embedment initiative are designed to provide information on behaviour change after traumatic brain injury.
Workers who understand why a person behaves the way they do, are well on their way to being able to effectively manage the challenges and help clients towards their goals.
